In the 2004-2005 bar year, the Pro Bono Committee has been focusing on
advertising pro bono opportunities in clinics around the State. Clinics
offer a great opportunity for lawyers to get a taste of pro bono that has
a limited time impact for the lawyer. Clinics are also a great way for
government lawyers to get involved in pro bono, because of the their
nature.
Clinics are generally just a few hours on a weeknight or weekend
and the lawyer gives advice to a walk-in client to assist them in
representing themselves or to assist the pro bono program running the
clinic in evaluating the case for further assistance.
For young lawyers who have time constraints, or who do not feel they have
the abilities to take on a pro bono case, clinics afford the opportunity
to volunteer. The Committee's hope is that clinics will serve as a good
entree for YLS members to the world of pro bono.
YLS members have participated in clinics in Montgomery County in February,
and are currently planning to participate in a clinic in Prince George's
County in April or May.
